This tired playground is reinvigorated with free standing play equipment
Armoy Park is a small, yet open neighbourhood park located in the Auckland suburb of East Tamaki which includes a community playground.
By late 2020 the existing playground was becoming tired, run-down and in serious need of a refurbishment or replacement, so the Auckland City Council appointed a consultant to manage the reinvigoration of the space.
The consultant’s brief of the project to Park Supplies & Playgrounds was for a cost-effective solution which included a climbing cube and a swing set. Park Supplies & Playgrounds were able to come to the table with a budget friendly option including a double swing set, four-sided activity cube and a slide.
The installation took place during June of 2021. Being right in the thick of New Zealand winter, the site came with some challenges including soil dampness and drainage issues. An excavator was brough on board to carry out a full dig out of the stie, which turned out to be very messy in the conditions, but they did a fantastic job of brining the site to optimum condition ahead of the equipment install.
Cost-savings achieved by recycling and repurposing
The Council had decided to go with Cushionfall® wood mulch for the surfacing so the old mulch was removed and as a further cost-saver it was also able to be utilised as mulch on some of the existing trees within the reserve.
The Park Supplies & Playgrounds team completed the equipment install of a Two Bay Curved Leg Swing with a Belt Seat, Half Bucket Seat & a Lillypad Basket as well as a Jungle Cube and Tower Slide. The Jungle Cube provides a multitude of climbing activities including Monkey Bars for children to swing on.
Park Supplies & Playgrounds were able to re-install an existing spinner which was in good condition and were also able to reuse the existing edging to bring costs down even further.
There was strong community interest in the project and the Park Supplies & Playground team enjoyed talking with the neighbours who popped over to the site to watch the install.
The newly reinvigorated playground was completed and open for public use by the end of June 2021 providing safe and exciting new play for local children in the East Tamaki community.
