Revitalising play for all ages and abilities.
Fe Tomich, Head of Junior School at St Cuthbert’s College, reached out to Jenny from Park Supplies & Playgrounds after receiving a recommendation from another school.
Having dealt with another company previously but finding no headway, Fe and the team at St Cuthbert’s were immediately impressed by Park Supplies & Playgrounds’ professionalism and willingness to engage in a collaborative approach towards revitalising their Junior School play area.
The project aimed to revitalise the school’s existing playground, which had become worn down and catered primarily to middle junior students. The goal was to rejuvenate the area and create a playspace that would be more inclusive and engaging for all students.
St Cuthbert’s College had clear objectives for the playground renovation. They wanted a playground with a natural aesthetic that could cater to the diverse needs of their students. The vision was to provide challenges for older students while offering a safe and engaging space for younger ones.
Ultimately, the goal was to create an inclusive environment where every student could find excitement and enjoyment. Fe says “When we’re out on duty watching, we certainly have achieved our goal – they’re really loving it.”
The school took an inclusive approach by involving students, staff, and friends of the school in the playground’s design process. A unique and creative method was employed, with Gilbert the Golden Retriever, a service dog who visits the school every Tuesday morning, posing questions to the girls in speech bubbles during a presentation to each class. “What would your dream playground look like?” and “What are your favourite types of equipment?” were just some of the questions that Gilbert asked. This approach ensured that the playground’s design was deeply informed by the students’ desires and requirements.
The selection of playground equipment was a thoughtful process that considered both student feedback and the developmental needs of the children. Key equipment choices included monkey bars, balance elements, slides, an obstacle course inspired by “The Floor is Lava,” and a creative element in the form of a Fale, which serves as a stage.
Later in the project, water play elements were added to cater to the preferences of younger students. The playground’s surface featured a combination of turf and wet pour surfacing around mounds, trampolines, and trees.
The intention was to create a comfortable, green space that could accommodate the sloped terrain of the site and facilitate child-directed play.
Installing the playground posed some challenges due to the sloped site and the presence of numerous manholes. However, the project team successfully navigated these obstacles and leveraged the site’s contours to create an engaging and functional space.
The playground design allowed girls to run up and roll down the hill, making optimal use of the unique topography. Fe says “I’m really happy with the way the space was utilised.”
The school held a festive ribbon-cutting ceremony that officially marked the opening of the playground.
Parents, friends, and board members were invited to celebrate this significant milestone. The girls added a personal touch by singing a song, and a Year 6 student had the privilege of being the first to play on the newly constructed playground.
A week later the school held their annual Grandparents Day, where the students performed, enjoyed a morning
tea, and took their grandparents on a tour of their classrooms and new playground. Fe remembers fondly, “A lot of the grandfathers got onto the Orex Spinner – it was lovely to see the playground being celebrated by all ages”.
The impact of the playground renovation was immediately evident in the feedback received:
On working with Jenny and the team at Park Supplies & Playgrounds, Fe says,
The collaboration between St Cuthbert’s College and Park Supplies & Playgrounds resulted in a highly successful playground project that aligned perfectly with the school’s vision. The project not only rejuvenated the physical space but also created an inclusive, engaging, and aesthetically pleasing environment for students of all ages to enjoy. The positive feedback from students, parents, and school staff highlights the project’s success and Park Supplies & Playgrounds’ commitment to excellence in playground design and construction.
