New life breathed into Korau Road Reserve Playground
Tikipunga is one of the largest suburbs in Whangārei, it’s in the north-east part of town and has the landmark Whangārei Falls nearby. The local community playground at Korau Road Reserve had by 2021 become run down and in need of replacement..
The Whangārei District Council approached several playground suppliers to submit designs to reimagine the space of which Park Supplies & Playgrounds was one. They wanted an all-inclusive playground which provided as much play value as possible for their budget.
As the timing was during the 2021 lockdown the Park Supplies & Playgrounds team were unable to get out to the site, so the council provided the footprint and dimensions to Playground Consultant Melissa (Mel Cowie). Mel worked closely with the Park Supplies & Playgrounds Design Team who took on board the councils brief and produced several design options via 3D CAD drawings that gave an accurate pictorial and dimensionally correct representation of the playground. From there Mel was able to work with the council to make choices on play equipment, layout colours and surfacing.
The council put the designs out to the Tikipunga community for feedback who were impressed with the variety of play activities included in the Park Supplies & Playgrounds designs and the council ultimately decided to engage them for the build of the new playground.
The old playground’s surfacing and equipment was removed to make way for a raft of exciting new play elements. Woodchip safety surfacing was placed down and new equipment installed such as a Lilypad Basket Swing, Belt and Half Bucket Seat Swings, balance activities and lots of climbing activities including Monkey Bars. For fun exit points from the main structure an always popular Fireman’s Pole and Wave Slide were added.
The playground was completed and opened to the community in mid-June 2022 with children since enjoying a fun and vibrant new playspace.
